Is DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) a dye or paint?
No. You might think that the DHA in your sunless tanning lotion is simply dying our skin. You might be shocked to learn that this is not the case. Rather, the DHA actually reacts with the amino acids and proteins that are in your skin. These amino acids are located in the dead layer of skin that is found on your skin’s surface. When the amino acid comes in contact with DHA, it causes a special reaction to occur. This special reaction is called the Maillard reaction, producing the accelerated bronzing color. In the tanning world this is instant result, instant gratification. Just remember, this is a cosmetic application and does not protect your skin from sunburning.
How should I prepare?
Be freshly showered, shaved, and exfoliated with no lotion on the skin. Be aware of any selfcare products that have an oil base in their ingredients (such as coconut oil or butters). Showering, shaving and exfoliating the day before are fine, however we recommend using an exfoliating towelette to remove lotion or natural oils that are in your pores. This ensures an even absorption. Make up will hinder absorption on the face. The life and longevity of your spray tan depends on utilizing products specifically formulated for sunless prep and maintenance. If you are unable to prepare at home directly before your appointment, we advise using an exfoliating towelette upon your arrival before stepping into the booth.
What about my hair and nails?
DHA react with the amino acids and proteins in your skin, which is lacking in hair. You will be provided with a hair net to protect your locks from getting damp. Barrier Cream will be provided to protect/prevent solution absorption around your cuticles, dry areas of your feet and the palms of your hands.
How soon can I shower?
Unless using a primer or opting for a Deluxe spray tan in the Unity Booth, development time is 12 hours. It is important to keep your skin dry and cool during that time to ensure even development. Opting for the prep/balancer in the Unity will shorten the development time significantly, only needing 4 hours. Be mindful of other beauty services (nail and hair appointments) and bring an umbrella if rain is in the forecast!
How do I take care of my tan?
Avoid hot and long showers as well as soaking in the tub. This speeds up the exfoliation process, shortening the life of your spray tan. The life and longevity of your spray tan depends on utilizing products specifically formulated for sunless prep and maintenance. Gently towel dry and immediately apply lotion. Use a lotion that is preferably mineral oil and petroleum free like Designer Skin Sunless Extender. The more often and more liberally you moisturize, the longer your tan will last and the better it will fade.
What else should I avoid?
Common items such as Dove, antibacterial soap or bar soap can significantly affect the integrity of your spray tan, compromising the tone. Other popular brands are drying to the skin due to high alcohol content. Ultimately, a sulfate-free body wash such as Norvell Shower Cleanser that is formulated specifically for spray tans is considered an inexpensive insurance policy for protecting your beauty treatment. You wouldn’t use a generic shampoo after receiving a color treatment from your hair stylist, would you?
How long will my spray tan last?
Typically the medium Unity Spray will last anywhere from 3 to 5 showers, the dark Unity Spray lasting 5 to 7, as it is not a different solution, just MORE of the solution. Frequent shaving or exfoliating will fade your spray tan at a faster pace. Activities such as swimming, saunas or hot tubbing will shorten the duration as well. Pre- and post-care is extremely important to the longevity of your spray.
What should I wear?
The booth application itself is completely private so most clients opt to spray in the buff. The solutions are all water soluble and will come out in the wash, but loose fitting, dark clothing is advised to wear immediately following your session. Leave the sports bra, tights and leggings at home!
Is the solution organic?
Mystic is the most recognized name in the Sunless world of tanning. While Sunless Inc strives to use the most natural and organic ingredients possible, there is currently no such thing as a 100% organic spray tanning solution in the United States. This is because the USDA has not authorized dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and erythrulose, the two primary active ingredients in spray tans, as organic.
However, the DHA and erythrulose used in Mystic Unity spray tans are considered eco-certified natural by a French organization that certifies our ingredients are derived from natural plant sources. This certification ensures that our ingredients meet the highest standards for sustainability and environmental responsibility.
Can I tan before or after spray tanning?
Yes! Hopping into a UV unit or red light therapy prior to your spray session is commonly referred to as a Cocktail Tan or Double Dip! Certain tanning lotions are approved for double dipping. Ask our certified skincare consultants which lotions won’t impede your spray tan development. After full development, you are free to tan or use any other wellness services at our salon!
